  • New Google Algorithms

Posted January 8, 2012 By Alain Picard in Search engines Optimization (SEO) With | No Comments

In the month of December, Google did over 30 search improvements, let’s take a look!

    • Image Search landing page quality signals. [launch codename “simple”] This is an improvement that analyzes various landing page signals for Image Search. We want to make sure that not only are we showing you the most relevant images, but we are also linking to the highest quality source pages.
    • More relevant sitelinks. [launch codename “concepts”, project codename “Megasitelinks”] We improved our algorithm for picking sitelinks. The result is more relevant sitelinks; for example, we may show sitelinks specific to your metropolitan region, which you can control with your location setting.
    • Soft 404 Detection. Web servers generally return the 404 status code when someone requests a page that doesn’t exist. However, some sites are configured to return other status codes, even though the page content might explain that the page was not found. We call these soft 404s (or “crypto” 404s) and they can be problematic for search engines because we aren’t sure if we should ignore the pages. This change is an improvement to how we detect soft 404s, especially in Russian, German and Spanish. For all you webmasters out there, the best practice is still to always use the correct response code.
    • More accurate country-restricted searches. [launch codename “greencr”] On domains other than .com, users have the option to see only results from their particular country. This is a new algorithm that uses several signals to better determine where web documents are from, improving the accuracy of this feature.
    • More rich snippets. We improved our process for detecting sites that qualify for shopping, recipe and review rich snippets. As a result, you should start seeing more sites with rich snippets in search results.
    • Better infrastructure for autocomplete. This is an infrastructure change to improve how our autocomplete algorithm handles spelling corrections for query prefixes (the beginning part of a search).
    • Better spam detection in Image Search. [launch codename “leaf”] This change improves our spam detection in Image Search by extending algorithms we already use for our main search results.
    • Google Instant enhancements for Japanese. For languages that use non-Latin characters, many users use a special IME (Input Method Editor) to enter queries. This change works with browsers that are IME-aware to better handle Japanese queries in Google Instant.
    • More accurate byline dates. [launch codename “foby”] We made a few improvements to how we determine what date to associate with a document. As a result, you’ll see more accurate dates annotating search results.
    • Live results for NFL and college football. [project codename “Live Results”] We’ve added new live results for NFL.com and ESPN’s NCAA Football results. These results now provide the latest scores, schedules and standings for your favorite football teams.
    • Improved dataset for related queries. We are now using an improved dataset on term relationships to find related queries. We sometimes include results for queries that are related to your original search, and this improvement leads to results from more relevant related queries.
    • Related query improvements. [launch codename “lyndsy”] Sometimes we fetch results for queries that are related to the original query but have fewer words. We made several changes to our algorithms to make them more conservative and less likely to introduce results without query words.
    • Better lyrics results. [launch codename “baschi”, project codename “Contra”] This change improves our result quality for lyrics searches.
    • Tweak to +1 button on results page. As part of our continued effort to deliver a beautifully simple user experience across Google products, we’ve made a subtle tweak to how the +1 button appears on the results page. Now the +1 button will only appear when you hover over a result or when the result has already been +1’d.
    • Better spell correction in Vietnamese. [project codename “Pho Viet”] We launched a new Vietnamese spelling model. This will help give more accurate spelling predictions for Vietnamese queries.
    • Upcoming events at venues. We’ve improved the recently released places panel for event venues. For major venues, we now show up to three upcoming events on the right of the page. Try it for staples center los angeles or.
    • Improvements to image size signal. [launch codename “matter”] This is an improvement to how we use the size of images as a ranking signal in Image Search. With this change, you’ll tend to see images with larger full-size versions.
    • Improved Hebrew synonyms. [launch codename “SweatNovember”, project codename “Synonyms”] This update refines how we handle Hebrew synonyms across multiple languages. Context matters a lot for translation, so this change prevents us from using translated synonyms that are not actually relevant to the query context.
    • Safer searching. [launch codename “Hoengg”, project codename "SafeSearch"] We updated our SafeSearch tool to provide better filtering for certain queries when strict SafeSearch is enabled.
    • Encrypted search available on new regional domains. Google now offers encrypted search by default on google.com for signed-in users, but it’s not the default on our other regional domains (eg: google.fr for France). Now users in the UK, Germany and France can opt in to encrypted search by navigating directly to an SSL version of Google Search on their respective regional domains: https://www.google.co.uk, https://www.google.de and https://www.google.fr.
    • Faster mobile browsing. [launch codename “old possum”, project codename “Skip Redirect”] Many websites redirect smartphone users to another page that is optimized for smartphone browsers. This change uses the final smartphone destination url in our mobile search results, so you can bypass all the redirects and load the target page faster.

  • How to improve Checkout Process

Posted November 8, 2011 By Alain Picard in Web Development-SEO-WordPress-eCommerce With | No Comments

Imagine walking into a busy, high traffic grocery store. Despite the large number of customers in the store, you notice abandoned shopping carts strewn about the aisles and checkout lanes. For many online businesses, this example illustrates perfectly the predicament many online retailers find themselves in. Why? For one, I believe many online retailers rarely actually test their own checkouts from the user’s perspective. If they had, they would have identified stumbling blocks.
Below I’ve compiled a fairly comprehensive list of ideas on improving the checkout process.

1- Eliminate pages, eliminate scrolling: Many usability experts decry the benefits of shortening the checkout to as few pages as possible. While in theory this works, sometimes the real world provides other factors that must be considered. For example, suppose you combine your whole checkout into 1 page. Sounds great, unless the page is a mile tall and requires excessive vertical scrolling. In my opinion, the basic rule of thumb should be to condense the checkout into as few pages as possible requiring little to no vertical scrolling.

2- Hide the Navigation: Hide both your top and side navigation once the customer has initiated the checkout in order to prevent distractions. At this point, your goal should be to finalize the order as soon as possible before the visitor loses interest.
3- Hacker Safe Logos: Services from HackerSafe or Control Scan can be a great way to boost confidence during checkout. For more info on Hacker Safe

4- Secure Certificate Logos: Most likely, your Payment Gateway and Secure Certificate provider offer a clickable security logo that you can install in your checkout pages. This provides an external way of validating the authenticity of your site.

5- Progress Indicator Bar: Always show shoppers where they are in the process. Everyone likes to know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

6- Prominent 1-800 Number: If you offer a live help line, make sure the number is highly visible everywhere in the checkout screens.

7- Live Chat: For those not wanting to call a 1-800 and wait on hold, Live chat is an excellent customer service feature. I’ve found it to be very effective for businesses with high value items such as jewelry.

8- No Default Credit Card Type: Typically, before or after you enter your credit card you are asked to select what type of card it is. DO NOT default this option to one of credit card types as many people will not notice it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve neglected to change the default option, and tried to use a MasterCard with the Visa option selected. Customers then become confused when they received an error telling them their credit card it invalid.

9- Auto-Detect Credit Card Type: Many card processors, including Authorize.net don’t even require you to have a credit card type drop down box since the first 4 numbers of the card determine that. Paypal does a nice job of automatically detecting and showing the credit card type with AJAX.

10- Don’t Up-Sell or Cross-Sell: Resist the temptation to up sell or cross sell during checkout. Remember, this is not like a supermarket checkout aisle. Users get distracted and are free to abandon their shopping carts at any time for any reason.

11- Gift Receipt / Gift Wrap Option: Customers have begun to expect this, especially during the holidays. No one wants to send a gift with an invoice showing what they paid. At the very least, offer a gift receipt with the prices not showing. Even better, include an option for a gift message.

12- User Friendly Credit Card Errors: I rarely have seen this done, yet it can make worlds of a difference. In the complex world of online credit card processing, it’s crucial to simplify any potential problems for the end user. If their credit card is declined due to an address mismatch, give them a list of possible solutions. For example, maybe they have moved recently and the processor or bank still has the old address on file? Or maybe they don’t know where to find the 3 digit security code on the back of the card.

13- Don’t Require Phone or Email: Though most e-tailors would like to have this information, you must ask yourself if it is important enough to risk losing the sale. Many privacy sensitive customers don’t like to give out this information.

14- Email List Opt-Out: Validate Email Address: Always allow people to opt-out. Though technically this is not required since they are making a purchase, it is a best practice required by most ISPs in order to be considered for white listing.

15- Copy Billing Info to Shipping Info: Most sites have this feature, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Nothing is worse than having to type the same information twice for the billing and shipping.

16- Don’t Require Login: Again, certain people will prefer not to create an account, so don’t risk losing the sale over this. Provide a “checkout without account” option.

17- Prominent “First time signup” Link: If you’re like most businesses, you probably get a significant amount of online business from first time shoppers. For this reason, there should always be a prominent “first time signup” link in the checkout when you ask someone to sign in.

18- Offer Paypal: While I have doubts about certain online payment methods such as Google Checkout and Bill Me Later, I strongly believe adding Paypal will help conversion, especially for international customers or those without credit cards.

19- Offer E-Check Payments: Another common payment method is by an e-check. Many customers who pay this way have checking accounts, but no credit or debit cards.

20- Security Code Explanation: Always provide a clear explanation of what this credit card security code is and why you need it. While most sites provide an image of where to find it, rarely do they answer the question of why they need it. Many shoppers are wary about giving this out, so provide an explanation of why it’s necessary for an online purchase.

21- Disable “Finalize Order” button On Click: A lot is going on technically speaking when the user clicks the “Finalize Order” button. Many users are impatient, and will click this button again and again until something happens. Depending on how your checkout is programmed, this can cause serious problems such as double billing or duplicate orders. Prevent this confusion by disabling the button after it’s clicked.

22- Show Estimated Processing Time: In addition to the above, show something to the nature of “please allow up to 60 seconds to process your order.” after the shopper clicks the finalize order button.

23- Bookmark able Receipt Page: Make sure your receipt page is not the same page that processes the order via a form post. Shoppers tend to bookmark receipt pages, but if it’s not available later they will be very confused.

24- Shipping Time Estimates: Usually, the first question on a customers mind after submitting an order is “when will I get it?” Prevent needless customer service interactions by providing an estimate of both when the order will ship and when it will arrive.

25- Eliminate Insecure Page Errors: A customer should never have to see a “this page contains insecure items” error right before they enter their credit card. Usually, this is just a case of the webmaster not using relative links properly with images (http:// vs. https://).

  • 11 Important SEO Facts You Should Know

Posted July 13, 2011 By Alain Picard in Search engines Optimization (SEO) With | No Comments

When Google change their algorithm, it’s an hurricane or innovation?
“This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites – sites which are low-value, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites – sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on. It is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded, and that’s exactly what this change does.” (Source: Google Blog)

    • Waiting to Exhale
Think you survived the big Panda storm? Don’t exhale just yet. Google will introduce around 550 or so improvements to its algorithm this year. Yes, 550. (Source: Wired.com)
    • Relevancy Matters More Than Ever
In their aforementioned quote, Google says it is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded. It goes without saying, Google places a tremendous amount of value on relevancy. So do everything you can to make sure your pages are as relevant as possible. That includes making sure your keywords are relevant to the overall theme of your site and accurately reflect your site ’s actual content.
    • Quality Trumps Quantity
Sites like EzineArticles, Buzzle and Associated Content got absolutely hammered by the Panda update. But why? Those sites have been around for years, and have a ton of quality content. Unfortunately, much of their content is also low-quality (although, to be fair, EzineArticles has been deleting much of their sub-standard content for a while now). However, by punishing the titans of article directories, Google sent a powerful message about quality.
    • Links From Article Directories Have Been Diminished
Personally, I think links from article directories were diminished long before the Panda update. Most article directories are notorious for the amount of low-quality content they contain. They’ll accept articles from just about anyone – regardless of how poorly written the articles are. That being said, despite being smacked down by the Panda update, EzineArticles has consistently had the highest quality standards among article directories. And after Panda, they’ve tightened their quality standards even more. So, I’m certain, they’ll bounce back.
    • Get Some Authority Juice
Authority sites are considered authoritative for a reason. It’s because people trust their content. That’s why authority sites rank so highly in Google’s SERPs. Authority sites have quality content and consistently show keyword to content relevancy. If you write articles, instead of submitting them to article directories which have diminishing link value, instead, submit them to top authority sites like SiteProNews, WebProNews, PromotionWorld, SearchEngineJournal and others. And while it might be considerably more difficult to get your articles accepted and published by those sites, the fact that Google places higher value on links from authority sites makes it worth the effort.
    • Social Media Matters
While only Google knows how much impact sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn actually have on search results, the fact that Google is providing real-time social sharing is an indication that Google takes participation in social media networks seriously. And if Google takes social media seriously, then, so should you. Besides, participating in social media networks will expose your content to an even wider audience. So, from a purely business standpoint, why wouldn’t you?
    • Avoid Excessive Advertisements or Images
Be mindful of having too many advertisements on any of your pages, in relation to “meaningful” content. There seems to be a direct correlation between the number of advertisements on a page (especially above the fold advertising), and the overall ranking of a page. Make sure you have plenty of quality, relevant content to balance out your web pages.
    • A Picture’s Worth…Unfortunately, Not a Thousand Words
What I just said about excessive advertisements applies to photo-centric sites as well. Try to strike a proportionate balance between meaningful content and images.
    • Google Loves Videos
Did you notice that video-centric sites like YouTube and Metacafe were largely unaffected by the Panda update? Videos have always done well in Google’s SERPs, and long before Panda struck, I had been adding YouTube videos to my website. In addition, I’ve converted many of my “How to” articles into videos.
    • Seek Blog Balance
Some of my blog posts are what I like to call “quick bites”…extremely short articles, usually around the 200-300 word range. I realize Google could easily construe such short articles as shallow, low-quality content – even though they’re actually quite substantive – despite their compendious nature. That’s why I make a conscious effort to also post plenty of meatier content. I have a ton of articles on my site that are well over a thousand words. If you have a lot of short articles on your site, either flesh them out or add lengthier content.
    • Age Matters
While this final point doesn’t have anything to do with the Panda update per se, it is SEO-related and important nonetheless – and a topic of considerable debate. Does the age of a domain matter? Depending on who you ask, you’ll get different answers to that question. Heck, there’s even disagreement among SEO experts on this topic. Not satisfied with the conflicting information that I was getting, I decided to do my own research.
Over a 30 day period, I viewed hundreds and hundreds of search results in dozens of different categories. My conclusion: The age of a domain is definitely a factor in the ranking of websites – no question about it. How much of a factor? Only Google knows the answer to that question. And while my research is far from scientific, I’m absolutely convinced, older domains have an advantage in Google’s SERPs.
  • 7 SEO Backlinks Tips

Posted July 10, 2011 By Alain Picard in Search engines Optimization (SEO) With | No Comments

Backlinks are the lifeblood of SEO. In order to get a website in top ranks within the search results pages without having to pay big money for advertising, the website has to have a large number of backlinks. Getting backlinks is one of the essential step to create a great search engine optimization campaign.

Backlinks are basically links from other websites that are pointed to you own websites. Search engines give more value to sites which are having relevant quality backlinks from their won niche. It’s one of major rank determining factor in search engine algorithms. When counting on the relevance of a website with a particular keyword, search engines usually take into consideration the number of relevant backlinks to that website.

How you get backlinks for your website?

    • Commenting on blogs
Blog commenting is an excellent way to build backlinks. However, most of the blogs use no-follow attributes, which don’t give your backlink much quality – In other words you will have to find relative do-follow blogs in your niche and should focus on combining them with helpful, informative comments and content.
    • Forum Posting and Participating in the Communities.
Backlinks in forum signatures is the best way to get backlinks. Most of the forums allow you to have signatures that display at the bottom of every post.
By putting backlinks and a bit of information about your website in your signature you can get backlinks with your every post provided that you are a regular member in that forum. Most of the forums allow you to create a signature with your posts and most of these forums are do-follow. Google gives more value to such backlinks if you are helping out people by answering questions. So your posts should be quality and relative to the subject. Only a thanks post or “I am newbie” here will not work at all.
    • Social Networking Sites
Facebook and Twitter are great platforms to share content which others may later reference and build backlinks. Facebook however goes a step further than this. The multi-oriented platform presents its users with a wide range of features through which they can not only connect and share but also promote their business and run campaigns for their products! Facebook is the leading social network at the moment with a user base of over 350 million! The numbers itself speak for the success and popularity of the social networking giants.
    • Social Bookmarking Sites
Social bookmarking sites allow anyone to bookmark websites, media and content online when they feel others should see and like it. Submitting articles to these bookmarking sites to get backlinks to your website in one of the best way.
    • Creating and maintaining blogs.
Creating blogs with relevant content is another good way to get backlinks pointing to your site. There are many high PR blogging platforms available across the Interner which you can utilize for your backlinking campaign. Blogging is a great way to get traffic to your website.
    • Video Submissions
Video Submissions is a powerful way to get backlinks as each video site generally allows you to place a backlink. Most of the people love to watch things rather than to read them. As thousands watch your video, they will follow through sending you traffic and building your backlinks.
    • Web 2.0 Properties (Linkwheels)
The easiest way to build backlinks is to create valuable content and publish them on web 2.0 platforms over the Internet.
  • Google SEO Services

Posted July 2, 2011 By Alain Picard in Search engines Optimization (SEO) With | No Comments

    Google SEO Services

SEO or Search Engine Optimization, involves the process of editing and moulding a page such that it will show up on the first page or first 40 search results for particular keywords related to the topic. This is important because the success or failure of a website depends on the traffic that it can attract and second the content it has. SEO aims at increasing the hits a website gets for particular keywords by promoting the web content on it to the top of the search results. Many online companies and free lancers give Google SEO services but choosing a right one can be a hassle especially if it is the first time for you.

Before learning the right questions to ask Google SEO services, it is necessary to have an idea of how pages get optimized for Google. It is quite simple, as per the topic or content of the webpage, there will be particular keywords, which are searched more often than other words on Google. Obtaining this information and then using that to increase the keyword density of the web content is how a page is optimized. Generally, in Google just as in other search engines, the keyword density determines the position of the page followed by other factors such as coherence, information etc. This is called on-page optimization.

Google SEO services, use another type of optimization called off-page optimization. Here, content on blogs, article sites, tweets etc. are created that link to the actual page being optimized. Google also takes into account the number of links a particular page has to decide its ranking. Therefore, the more links the page has the higher probability of it coming on top. Specifically, such services depend on Social media sites and Social networking sites such as Facebook, Linkedin, YouTube etc. These blogs, videos, articles that describe the webcontent being optimized act as a form of free advertisement since posting videos and comments or articles and blogs is free.

As one can see, Google SEO services, can propel the business of a website to new extremes. However, there are many SEO firms both online and local to choose from so, how does one go about finding the right one. There is no easy answer, in fact, any such firm with enough experience should work well. With experience, SEO services have good information about the workings of Google and things that work or do not work. Some SEO services although might have enough experience, might not have worked much with Google. It is important to hire some agency that has exclusive Google experience since, there are some differences in the way Google performs its searches as opposed to other search directories.

Some Google SEO services, can charge a premium value for their services because of the extra value added services they do such as web content developing, other search engine optimizations, web hosting etc. These services are not such a bad option since one has to simply communicate with a single firm to take care of their website.

Choosing a good seo service can be difficult, as it often takes time to see the results. Many seo companies oversell their products so take time asking questions of the search engine optimisation company you plan to use.

  • Top WordPress SEO Plugins

Posted June 13, 2011 By Alain Picard in Web Development-SEO-WordPress-eCommerce With | No Comments

Witch WordPress SEO Plugins to use?

There are many WordPress SEO plugins available and it can be difficult to know which ones to install.
Below are some of the top WordPress SEO plugins.

    SEO Packs
There are a number of WordPress SEO plugins which include many customizable functions:

All in One SEO Pack – One of the most well known WordPress SEO plugins which does a bit of everything and can be used “out of the box”. There is a paid version for SEO professionals.
FV All In One SEO Pack – A simplified version of the above with a streamlined interface.
Platinum SEO Pack – Based on All in One SEO Pack but more advanced.
Headspace2SEO – A powerful plugin to manage meta-data and handle a wide range of SEO tasks.
SEO Ultimate WordPress Plugin – An all-in-one plugin with many powerful features.
Greg’s High Performance SEO – Lots of functionality which avoids the need for some of the plugins below.

The above is not a definitive list and new multifunction WordPress SEO plugins are still appearing. So which to install? Firstly be careful about installing plugins that are still in beta, secondly decide how much you want to get into SEO.

If you are not sure All In One SEO Pack is a good starting point. It is very popular, as evidenced by the more advanced plugins providing a migration path.

    Other WordPress SEO Plugins
Provided the features of these plugins are not included in your SEO Pack plugin the following are useful:

Google XML Sitemaps – Generates a site map supported by Google, Bing and Yahoo. Enables the search engines to find and index content quickly.
SEO Slugs – A simple plugin that removes common words from slugs (filenames). Makes URLs more search engine friendly.
SEO Smart Links – Automatically generates links, both internal and external, within your content (external links can be no follow). Such links will boost your on page SEO.
SEO Friendly Images – Automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes. This can be very beneficial for SEO purposes.
WP-Super-Cache – Speeds up serving of pages by holding a static copy to avoid database calls. Important because slow loading of pages will have a negative effect on search engine rankings.
Redirection – Manages 301 redirections and tracks 404 errors which can then be redirected.
SEOPressor – Analyses pages and posts and reports on content optimisation with recommendations. It is vital for SEO purposes that the search engines see your content as highly relevant to the targeted keywords.

SEOPressor is one of my favourite WordPress SEO Plugins because it avoids the time consuming task of checking on page SEO manually (I suspect that few people have the patience to do this properly) and gets you into the habit of writing in a way that is search engine friendly.

  • WordPress Plugin SEOPressor

Posted May 20, 2011 By Alain Picard in Web Development-SEO-WordPress-eCommerce With | No Comments

Secrets Behind the WordPress Optimization Unleashed

SEOPressor has raised a lot of questions about how it works since its release earlier this month. Daniel Tan, the developer, now unleashes the secrets about how his product almost always manages to bring websites of any niche to the number 1 position on Google.

The newly released WordPress plugin SEOPressor has caused quite a stir in the Internet market because of its claims to be able to bring any WordPress website of any niche to the coveted #1 position on the Google search engines. The plugin has reached quite the limit of popularity already with several tens of thousands downloads within its short promotional period itself. The product has been developed and marketed single-handedly by the SEO Guy Daniel Tan, who is quite known for other products within the same niche.

What gave a boost to SEOPressor in its early days was the fact that Daniel Tan managed to shroud its methods in a veil of secrecy. The results were there for all to see, but the developer didn’t reveal much about the method of working of his website. However, owing to a large public demand, Daniel Tan has become vocal about the way SEOPressor works.

The basic rule of working of SEOPressor is on-page SEO, which is done in a variety of ways. The plugin is a completely automated solution which manages tasks like calculating keyword density, formatting keywords for search engine optimization, calculating the SEO score of a WordPress Page to determine how well it will be ranked on the search engines, management of content such as posts and so on. These things would ordinarily take a webmaster a lot of time to carry out and even then they would not guarantee any results, but SEOPressor is designed to perform these important aspects of on-page SEO in an automatic and efficient manner.

Additionally, SEOPressor also performs a lot of analysis on WordPress websites that helps the webmaster to determine the real worth of the website. It analyses the title tags, the proper placement of the keywords, the images and links used on the page, the decorations used in the fonts and so on. By analyzing these features of the website, SEOPressor can rightly suggest any changes that need to be made so as to enhance the prospects of the website. Basically, SEOPressor improves the search engine ratings of websites, bringing them to the number 1 position on Google, which is instrumental on bringing a large volume of traffic to the website.

However, Daniel Tan is still tight-lipped about one aspect of SEOPressor, which is about how the top results on SEOPressor are always in complete tandem with the top results on Google Analytics. This part of SEOPressor still remains shrouded in mystery, but that doesn’t deter it from being the most in-demand aspect of this software application. SEOPressor plugin is available here.
